“The materiality of air, its pollution and finitude have become difficult to ignore. Observing light reflected on tiny particles as they diffuse into a void holds an ethereal, transcendent fascination, where beauty, horror and confrontation merge and offer the contemporary sublime of the Anthropocene.I am interested in the human intrusion into illusive and less tangible matter such as air. Neither subject nor object, it seemingly has no presence, yet it has become a sink for exhausted fossil fuels and other pollutants, upsetting a complex earth system. In my painting, I use many layers, colours and a variety of processes to capture this entangled complexity. My methodology includes layering of paint followed by selective erasure. In a way, this is a subversive and deliberate interference and erasure of a healthy climate. It is a reference to an uncertain ecological future.”
